Egyptians wish to sever Israel ties

An Iranian expert in regional affairs believes that the Egyptian President Muhammad Mursi’s severance of ties with the Syrian government and his recognition of the Zionist regime have fueled the current popular protests in the country.

Majid Safataj told Qudsna that the nature of current protests was different from those that occurred few weeks earlier as many of the protestors are the same individuals who set up the February 11, 2011 revolution and categorically oppose any exchanges with the Zionist regime of Israel.

The expert said Mursi also fell out with the nation over his authorization of the deployment of US commandoes in the Sinai desert in breach of the dignity of the Egyptian nation.

Safataj said Mursi has no option but to bow to the demands of the protestors otherwise Egypt would head towards an internal crisis and jumps out of the government’s control.

In another regard, the expert maintained that the Hamas government has been swayed by the Muslim Brotherhood’s policies due to its partisan links and for the same reason it is growingly deviating from its principle positions. “Hamas has suffered the paradox of combating with Israel and at the same time supporting Mursi who has relations with Israel,” he added.

The expert cautioned that the Palestinian movement risks losing its popular base due to its current position.
