Abbas announcement for resignation, a political maneuver or real decision?

Mehdi Azizi (Qodsna): Mahmoud Abbas' sudden decision for resigning from the Palestinian Authority elections which is set to be held on January provoked doubts in the world public opinion.

The decision was taken under the conditions that Middle East peace process reached to deadlock after the speech of Hillary Clinton, the U.S. Secretary of State about partial freeze of Zionist settlement construction. One can not understand whether Abu-Mazen’s decision is serious or just for putting pressure on America to stop Zionist settlement in return for peace.

No doubt that this decision shows the degree of Abbas’ hopelessness over recent U.S. stance for accepting Zionist premier's view for not freezing settlement constructions.

Abu Mazen is getting angry and become furious that America has left him alone. After all, he has always met U.S. demands and voiced readiness to negotiate with Zionist regime without any preconditions.

However, if Abu Mazen is serious in his decision, it means that he has done the largest sacrificial action in his political life. Such decision will return the Palestinian equitation to the first phase of resistance and occupation.

On the other hand Abu Mmazen decision may be a political maneuver aiming to pressure U.S. to halting settlement construction in occupied Palestinian territories in return for his putting constraints on Palestinian cause.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, such decision can prepare the presence of legal conditions for elections in order to get more votes.

It is obvious that one of Abu Mazen’s main goals is to prepare conditions to eliminate Hamas movement from political arena.
