Obama heading to region with prospect of dead born peace talk
US President Barak Obama who refused to visit 'Israel' in his first presidential term due to a deep schism with the Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu is now going to visit the territories during a visit to southeast Asia.
Many analysts hold that Obama's visit, scheduled to start on March 20, signals his efforts to boost Netanyahu's weak position following his poor performance in the recent Israeli general elections.
Despite an anti-Obama Netanyahu who lost 10 seats in the elections, parties who have scored a strong win in the elections are calling for more ties with the US government. Obama then would arrive in 'Israel' with a smile of victory.
The US president would seek several goals in the trip. For one thing, he would insure the Israeli parties that the US supports Israel in any conditions.
He would also seek to revive the so-called 'peace talks' between Israel and the Palestinian authority to which Netanyahu was voicing strong disapproval before elections.
Obama however may have a hard task ahead as the Palestinian resistance that has taken the upper hand in the political scene would not allow the PA authorities to resign for any conditions set by the Israeli side.
The Palestinian groups, including the PA and the resistance groups of Hamas and Islamic Jihad are currently talking for reconciliation in Cairo. The resistance groups then would insist on keeping the arms of resistance and would press the PA officials not to bow to the Israeli demands of renunciation of armed resistance. This is a real cause of concern for Obama and may prompt him to think of an upcoming peace talk as dead-born.
Obama may also be intended to affect the line-up of future Israeli government by paving the way for a larger involvement of pro-US parties like "the movement" led by Tzipi Livni or the Labor led by Shelly Yachimovich.
