US Senator calls for conditioning aid to Israel

The Massachusetts senator’s comments come as more progressive Democrats are urging America to condition foreign aid as a means of pressuring Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians.
U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren urged the Biden administration to consider conditioning military aid to Israel in order to help Israel “adjust course.”
“We should talk about the elephant in the room—America’s military assistance to Israel,” she said.
The senator went on to say that she is committed to Israel’s security, “but if we’re serious about arresting settlement expansion and helping move the parties toward a two-state solution, then it would be irresponsible not to consider all of the tools we have at our disposal.”
“One of those is restricting military aid from being used in the occupied territories,” she stated. “By continuing to provide military aid without restriction, we provide no incentive for Israel to adjust course.”
Republican Jewish Coalition executive director Matt Brooks immediately shot back.
Warren’s comments come as more progressive Democrats are urging America to condition aid as a means of pressuring Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians. Last week, Rep. Betty McCollum proposed legislation to restrict U.S. aid to go towards aiding Israel’s policies in the West Bank. U.S. President Joe Biden has rejected such calls.
