Spanish, Irish premiers support Palestine’s UN membership

Prime ministers of Spain and Ireland have expressed their countries readiness to support membership of Palestine in the United Nations.
Tehran, Qodsna - Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez has emphasized that his country will try for Palestine's membership in the United Nations.
According to Al Jazeera, some European Union member states, including Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and the Republic of Malta, support the recognition of an independent Palestinian state and expressed their readiness to cooperate in this regard.
Sánchez had also met his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Store to gain support for the recognition of the Palestinian state.
He also raised the issue of the formation of an independent Palestinian state during his visit to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar last week and told reporters that Spain would recognize Palestine as a country by the end of June.
If the international community does not recognize Palestine, it will not help to form an independent Palestinian state, he added.
Earlier on April 13, Store said that Oslo is ready to recognize Palestine as an independent state.
He noted that his government has not yet determined a firm timetable, but Norway will coordinate with "like-minded countries" to speed up efforts to recognize the Palestinian state.
In November, Norway's parliament approved a government proposal to recognize an independent Palestinian state.
Although the EU did not support the move to recognize the Palestinian state unanimously, Ireland and Spain have repeatedly announced their readiness since the onset of war in Gaza.
The new Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris has called once again for recognizing Palestine as an independent state.
Ireland believes that “reason has now been replaced by revenge,” CNN quoted Harris on Tuesday evening as saying in an interview.
"I want to see the EU use every lever at its disposal to exert the maximum amount of pressure to bring about a ceasefire," he said.
This involves "like-minded countries coming together to recognize the state of Palestine," he added.
The Zionist regime has criticized Ireland for its stance on Palestine and the war in Gaza, saying Dublin is on the “wrong side.”
Since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, nearly 34,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the enclave.
Many world leaders, figures and personalities have condemned the regime’s genocidal war on Gaza and called for an immediate truce in the strip.
In a related development, the International Committee of the Red Cross has criticized the long-term period of torture against the Palestinian detainees.
