Egypt to increase electricity supply to Gaza

Egypt is to increase its supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip, Egyptian minister for electricity and energy, Dr Hassan Younis, said on Friday.

The announcement came following talks on Thursday night between Dr Younis and Dr Omar Katanah, director of power and natural resources in Palestine.

Dr Younis said there was a bilateral agreement between the Palestinian Authority and the Egyptian government to set up a new electricity generator for the Gaza Strip.

The coastal area has been subject to frequent power outages for many months. The new generator will alleviate the problems with the electricity supply.

He added that the two sides had agreed to hold a meeting with the Islamic Development Bank and a number of specialists in electricity to study the funding of the implementation of the plan.

Dr Hassan pointed out that they also intended to look into the development of renewable energies, and solar energy in particular.

The Egyptian power network has restored parts of the Palestinian electricity network in the Gaza Strip after they were destroyed during Israeli military attacks.
