Ambassador Iravani condemns US-Israeli acts of aggression against Iran

Iran's UN ambassador has condemned recent US-Zionist regime’s acts of aggression against Iran and its nuclear facilities as blatant violations of the UN Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law.

Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative, Amir Saeid Iravani, made these remarks on Monday during a forceful address at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly's Second Committee.

Ambassador Iravani warned that the situation in West Asia is extremely grave as a result of interventionist and militaristic policies of some extra-regional powers, and the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

He outlined pressing global challenges and called for enhanced multilateralism and cooperation among nations.

Ambassador Iravani began his statement by congratulating the newly elected Chair of the Second Committee and aligning his delegation with the remarks made by Iraq on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

He highlighted recent speeches by global leaders at the General Assembly, emphasizing their calls for urgent action to address various interconnected challenges, including the necessity for climate action, the fulfillment of development commitments, and reforms in international financial governance.

“Development cannot be pursued in isolation; it requires stability, solidarity, cooperation, and equitable access to resources,” Iravani stated.

He criticized the failure of developed nations to meet their financial commitments and their reluctance to uphold the principles of multilateralism, stressing that these shortcomings have plagued global development efforts.

Iran's ambassador said the current conditions are pushing back the region’s development and exacerbating its challenges day by day.

He described the alarming rise in military expenditures, arguing that these investments divert critical resources away from essential development priorities.

Iravani cited the dire situation in the Middle East, attributing its challenges to interventionist policies of external powers, ongoing conflicts, and the ongoing devastation resulting from Israel’s genocidal war against the people of Gaza.

Citing the recent war against Iran, he condemned the Israeli regime’s aggression, supported by the United States, particularly attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities.

“These actions constitute blatant violations of the UN Charter and international law,” Iravani said, warning that such violations threaten international peace and security and undermine trust among nations.

Iran's envoy added that the attacks also undermined international peace and security, and gravely jeopardized the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Rejecting unilateral coercive measures, Iravani argued that these practices violate fundamental human rights and disrupt legitimate trade, finance, and investment, thereby exacerbating the already difficult situation for vulnerable populations, particularly children and women.

On the domestic front, Iravani outlined Iran’s priorities, which include public health improvements, social welfare enhancement, and poverty eradication.

He emphasized the need to address climate challenges, noting that West Asia faces severe environmental issues such as rising temperatures, drought, and water scarcity.

He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to working collaboratively with other nations to mitigate these threats.

In closing, Iravani warned that unilateralism is threatening the world by undermining the foundations of peace, stability, and development, and must be firmly rejected.

He stressed that the world urgently requires multilateralism, solidarity, and collective action with the central role of the United Nations.

“I thank you for your attention,” Iravani concluded, underscoring the importance of international solidarity in facing the challenges ahead.
