High-level Iranian delegation arrives in Islamabad for talks with US

A high-level delegation from Iran arrived in Islamabad late Friday to hold negotiations with the United States, following an invitation from Pakistan’s prime minister and Tehran’s agreement to a ceasefire under its own conditions.

The delegation, headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, landed in the Pakistani capital aboard Flight “Minab 168,” a reference to 168 schoolgirls killed by the US military on January 28.

The Iranian team was welcomed upon arrival by senior Pakistani officials, including the army chief, foreign minister, interior minister, and the speaker of the National Assembly, as well as Iran’s ambassador to Islamabad, Reza Amiri Moghadam.

The delegation comprises specialized committees covering security, political, military, economic, and legal affairs. Key Iranian officials accompanying the team include Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati, and Secretary of the Defense Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian.

On the US side, Vice President J. D. Vance is present in Islamabad alongside negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

The talks are scheduled to begin on Saturday in Islamabad, days after Iran and the US struck a ceasefire pausing 40 days of US-Israeli war of aggression against the Islamic Republic.
