Hamas calls for protecting Palestinian education system

The Hamas Movement has urged international action to safeguard education in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Al-Quds, demanding accountability for Israeli violations against Palestinian teachers and educational facilities.

In a statement marking World Teachers’ Day on Monday, Hamas accused the Israeli occupation army of destroying over 90 percent of schools and universities across the Gaza Strip and killing more than 1,050 teachers.

Hamas said that in the West Bank and Al-Quds, teachers face arrest, persecution, restrictions, and killing, describing such practices as a “violation of Palestinians’ right to education.”

Hamas also denounced Zionist regime’s efforts to “Israelize” the Palestinian education system and its curricula, as well as the closure of educational institutions.

It asserted that such measures would neither erase Al-Quds’ Arab and Islamic identity nor weaken the connection of younger generations to their city.

The Movement commended Palestinian teachers for carrying out their mission despite the ongoing war and severe lack of resources, stressing the vital need to support them against conditions that threaten the continuity of their work.

It urged the international community to halt Zionist regime’s violations against the Palestinian education sector and provide the necessary support and funding to keep schools running.
